Census: See local population growth by neighborhood - Sacramento News - Local and Breaking Sacramento News | Sacramento Bee

The breakdown by neighborhood is worth a look. The central city looks like people left en masse, but if you actually count the population breakdown, the population only dropped around 300 people for a population of 25,000--about 1% drop. And considering that these are fully built out neighborhoods, it's not surprising that they didn't gain a lot of population when compared to parts of town that were rice fields 10 years ago.

Im very surprised that the central city even recorded a loss. Not with all the new residential units and increased activity in Midtown through the past few years.

I think the map is misleading. Established neighborhoods have climaxed and there shouldn't be much population change. A slight change either way is normal.

We are also in the middle of a severe economic recession, and by local standards, extremely severe. There was an article in the SacBee several years ago stating DMV records indicated some people left Sacramento when the economy tanked.

It is obvious what is going on in Del Paso Hts and areas of South Sac. The last pockets of middle-class are fleeing those areas. I would love to know what is going on in The Pocket. I always thought that was a nice area.

Most of the new residential developments were built west of 21st St and the map reflects that.

In 2000, I was renting a two-bedroom apartment in Marshall School for $500 a month--the same place would probably cost about $800-900 now and probably rented for $1000 during the boom. So we probably lost some folks on the lower end of the income scale due to boom-related gentrification. And in the past ten years, while there have been some new developments downtown, there were also closures of a lot of SRO hotels and loss of some older residential units in the downtown core.

The pocket used to be a very good neighborhood about 10 years ago or so. Now the thugs from Florin/South Sac area are creeping into the neighborhood No wonder people are running away from the area.
