We're a young family looking to buy our first home. We have a budget around 250k. We currently live in Curtis Park and prefer older homes but could never afford one around here, especially one with three bedrooms.

I'm leaning towards a west Sacramento, it's close to downtown (where I work) and the homes are affordable. I have a young son. I get so little time with him and the idea of a long commute is very unappealing. Also, as much as we like older homes, the newer homes out there are really tempting after being surrounded by toys in a 900sqft house for the last year.

Do people have opinions on west Sacramento? What about other areas such as Tahoe Park?

We had a condo in West Sac. I actually liked the area around where the Nugget and Target is located. Its a younger crowd and they seemed to be more educated and urban.
Values have tanked so I'd avoid brand new, look for foreclosures and short sales. There are some terrific deals to be had. Good luck!
