We are seriously looking into moving to Placerville with our young daughter. So far, at least on paper, everything checks out--schools pretty good, houses reasonable, out in the country, close to family, etc., etc. But just from reading other links, it seems like the place has many registered sex offenders and drug rehab/alcohol recovery facilities. True????? We absolutely want to live in a safe community or at least as safe as possible.

My husband telecommutes and I am a stay at home mom so we can look other places to live but we liked the cute downtown, history, and community spirit of Placerville...

Thoughts from those in the area? Thank you.

No longer anywhere near but my wife loved living there sometime back and we always enjoyed visiting. Statistically the crime rate is relatively low. Tourists can be pesky in season and on weekends but the town does have its own, foothill, gold rush charm. I think you could do a lot worse.

We have lived in this area for the past decade and raised our daughter here. There are iffy parts of town, like near upper Broadway, where the homeless congregate, that I wouldn't recommend. That area, yes, there are some halfway houses and transitional services because that's where the people who use the services are. But I don't think there are "more" than usual. Just watch what part of town, in Placerville, and Pollock Pines, too.

Look into the Mother Lode School District area near Placerville, or the Buckeye School District in Shingle Springs. Both are outstanding, and safe. I do not regret one iota raising my daughter here.

Please ask if you have any more questions.

My daughter has had friends that are caucasian, African-American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American. No worries. I welcome diversity....

Default what does that have to do with the thread?

You know what? All over the world there are areas that are entirely asian, black, etc. And in europe plenty of places that are historically white-some are known for their excellent schools and quality of life,s ome for their poverty, crime, etc. Really, the fact that a place 'is mostly or all white' is not in itself a crime, or an indication of either redneck or racism, you know?

I'm so over this diversity=enlightened attitude, as though there needs to be an apology for a place being white. geesh. It's silly and ignorant to equate tolerance with diversity, per se. It's a more nuance subject that requires a bit of critical thinking and moving out of PC reactionary paradigms. And yea, I've lived all over the world, literally. I'm just perplexed by your comments, really. Someone says they had a great experience and a sense of community, and perhaps their child is white. Do white children not deserve a sense of place and community, and of belonging, a sense of connection to their heritage, b/c others think they will become racist as a result? It's really become extreme. [Though this poster did not say their child has a sense of family values due to the community being 'white'; that was my inference/elaboration to your post/comment.]

That said, I'm appreciating the info in this thread. Looking to get out of so cal....interested in the foothills area....

Default Cute downtown with hanging man

Just be aware that Placerville is a very conservative community with few cultural outlets. If that's OK, you'll be fine.
