Hey everyone,
I have three boys who love to play in the sand at the beach, but I hate to drive them all the way to the ocean. Any good spots along the rivers or folsom lake/lake natomas that anyone could recommend? Must have sand and prefer not to pay a parking fee, but I know that is tough to find! Also, I'm not a huge lover of people or crowded beaches - not looking for a scene, just a beach. Any ideas? I know these places are probably crowded in the summer on weekends, but I would be taking them during the week.... THANKS in advance =)

It's hard to avoid the parking fees.

Folsom Lake has Beals point (off Auburn Folsom road) that has a nice big sandy beach. Bring an umbrella as the shade is far from the beach. Lots of families with kids go in the summertime. I think parking is $8 but it might have changed. You can get a yearly pass to the state parks for around $125 or something like that. Granite Bay and Beal's Point

There is also a small area in Cameron Park off Cambridge that has a beach with a roped off swimming area for kids. I think it's a $5 per person entrance fee (under 6 free and yearly pass available). This park also has a playground and lots of room to run around, picnic areas with BBQs, etc.

3rding Folsom Lake.

Went to Beal's Point last summer ... totally worth it IMO. I liked the snack bar where you could rent floaties.

I think there are some stretches of the Sacramento River near Discovery Park and Miller Park where the Corps of Engineers dump sand occasionally--they seem fairly popular on the weekends.

There's also Paradise Beach- you can park at Glen Hall Park.
Glenn Hall Park - East Sacramento - Sacramento, CA
or Glenbrook Park on La Riviera Dr., take the trail back over the levee -follow the overhead power lines and keep heading towards the river. There are some sandy "beach" areas and it's also a nice area to fish.

Both of these spots are somewhat of a walk, so keep that in mind if you have little ones.
Also, keep your eyes peeled for snakes, I've come across poisonous and non poisonous varieties at both of these spots.
And make sure they wear a PFD if they go into the water! Its the smart thing to do and it's a law.
Have fun!
