Interesting.....thought I'd post this info for so many who are looking for a cheap place to live in Sacramento.

Hotel Berry gets face-lift

Quote:
There are 104 studio apartments, averaging 215 square feet in size, which come equipped with furniture, a bathroom, kitchenette, heating and air conditioning.
Rent will run from $399 to $599, depending on the tenant's income. Jamboree's chief operations officer, Mary Jo Goelzer, said rent follows the Department of Housing and Urban Development's national standards for affordable housing. Applicants must earn at least two times the monthly rent, with the exception of those with a subsidy, such as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, also known as Section 8. Many traditional SRO tenants, transitory workers who move often, would no longer find a bed there, as the shortest lease is six months. Potential renters also must undergo a credit and background check. The units will be more comfortable, with their own bathrooms and kitchens.

I came across another article about affordable rents in Sacramento. Unfortunately, there is a long waiting list.

Affordable rental housing scarce in Sacramento region - Real Estate - The Sacramento Bee

Possibilities:
Highland in No Highlands
White Rock Family Village in EDH
Mercy Housing will offer 150 affordable units in a high-rise complex at Seventh and H streets

Two different things--the first is an apartment building whose basic rent is $399-599, the second is about waiting lists for county-based "housing project" housing. You don't need a Housing Choice Voucher or go through a county waiting list to sign up at the Berry, you just have to make relatively little money--around $800-1500 a month.

Might have helped if Sacramento, and other Redevelopment agencies, were somewhat competent at managing funds. Hotel Barry cost $240,000 a room to renovate. The net effect was to reduce a larger number of more affordable units with a smaller number of less affordable units, all while costing the tax payer $24.8 million. When you grossly misuse money for affordable housing to take away housing stock while simultaneously spending extravagant amounts of money, you do not garner a whole lot of support. Thankfully, Redevelopment is dead now. Maybe we will get back to providing affordable housing with what money there is instead of taking it away.

Its not clear that redevelopment is dead now, it appears that its just shifting to either "Infrastructure Funding Districts" or "Sustainable Communities Investment Authorities" neither of which will require voter approval and both of which will have substantially less public oversight.
