I do the EG to downtown commute via I5 and if I leave before 7am it takes 20 minutes.

After 8:30am it's 20 minutes again.

Remember this is via I5 not 99
True, but we're still talking about going all the way to Auburn and you're talking about 50 minutes MINIMUM from EG. Any unexpected delays, or house/work being a good jaunt from the freeway would make that even longer. Certainly do-able for most people, but not ideal.

I'm the OP. Thanks for the input. I don't know whether I will get the job yet, just wondering about the commute just in case. The job could be in Rocklin (a little closer to me) or auburn. As for moving, we own a house in Elk Grove and my husband works in Stockton. He could end up transferring to Sacramento, but unless and until that happens moving would not be possible.

Default Don't do it.

This is going to get old really fast, especially when the fog and rain set in during winter. Save your sanity and move if you take the job.

What if I'm only driving to Rocklin, is that any better? Moving is really not an option at the moment. Maybe in a year, but not at the moment.

About 13 miles better. It doesn't really change the route at all--it just shortens the distance, so you'd save 15 minutes or so each way. Absent traffic, it wouldn't be too bad of a drive--just depends on how bad 99 and Cap City Freeway are. Or, as others mention, you could hit I-5 to Reno 80 and skip traffic, but have a further drive. If your job let you work off hours or an alternate work week, putting you on the road outside of the 7 to 9, 4 to 7 hours, it might not be too bad.

I agree with those who have suggested moving to Auburn. The area is very inviting, easy to live and so very pretty!
