I'm moving to Sacramento next year in august near the Arco Arena area. I don't know anything about it and I've never even been in Cali for that matter. My husband and I are going down there for college. I'm nervous because I've heard people say there are a lot of bad areas in Sac. with theft and shootings. I'm trying to stay away from that so could anyone tell me if this area is safe or not......so I know what to expect.. and if not where do you reccomend living that isn't too far away

Which college are you going to? And what is your budget? Buying or renting?

Not that the Arco area is bad (that's North Natomas) but there are better areas

And depending on where you are going to school, say Sac State, you can get a nicer place closer to the university

WHat is low? Do you demand space - does it matter?

Move to Midtown it's inbetween all your areas you need and they have one bedroom galore. YOu'll be happy to be there - I swear

My husband and I live in North Natomas and we really like it. We bought a house just north of Del Paso Blvd. I would suggest staying north of I-80. We lived in South Natomas for 4 years and I was very glad to make the move to North Natomas. Overall it is a good area and if you are looking for a nice place to live on a smaller budget, it would probably suit you both well. I would make sure to check out multiple apartment complexes though to get a feel for what is comfortable for you. If you chose to look elsewhere, I would say stay out of South Sac. Good luck on your search and welcome to Sacramento!

Here is a crime map for the Sacramento region.

Sacramento Bee CrimeMapper

If UTI is the automechanics school in Natomas that I think it is, then somewhere in North Natomas probably isn't a bad place to rent.

One of the local community colleges has a branch in Natomas. I don't know how many cars you will be bringing down, but if you look for a place near one of the schools, one of you might be able to walk to class.

You will find plenty of new apartments in Natomas. It is generally a good area to live and the school system is great if you have any kids. Good luck!

North Natomas is relatively cheap, which also means that it attracts those of lower income. The entire Natomas area, which was pretty nice a few years ago if you like tract housing, is beginning to become more and more crime ridden. Probably not a terrible place (considering Sac isn't the safest of cities anyways) but I don't know if you'll want to make it your permanent home. Also, the North is a better, lower crime area than the Southern area.

There are many great choices around the Arco Arena area. This area is a satelite bedroom community for Sacramento. The street's are wide and clean. There are many services and resturants. As far as safety. Sacramento is not safe. Many gangs and drug activity. People are murdered every week. Oregon has different gun laws then CA. CA don't want the average citizen to have guns for protection. Consequently the Crooks and the Cops are the only one's with guns.
Sacramento is dry, and hotbut most of all it is some ofthe worde air you can breath. We arein a valley. When you drive to Sacramento you will notice the polluted air just sits on top of the city. (you will be paying out of state tuition)

dcramon: California's gun laws are somewhat stricter than Oregon's, but nowhere near as strict as you make out. CA has some annoying requirements for pistols ("safety" requirements and assault-weapon bans) and you have to have a Handgun Safety Certificate and register--but you can get them.

Concealed-carry permits are another story...
