Hi everyone,
My wife and I just relocated to Salem (north of downtown) for her career (working for State Lands dept.), and I'm looking to continue mine as an educator. I have a strong potential job prospect in with the Hillsboro School district, and would like insight to how the rush hours work in the area. What sort of commute should I expect (guessing around 90 mins)? There is also the possibility we could easily move out of our month-to-month apt and look elsewhere. Would this be the more prudent option considering we only have one vehicle? If so what are our options?

Just to give you my commuting past, I have several years of 60-90 min commutes by car/public transportation under my belt to/from the SF bay area and NYC.

And please be brutally honest, no sugar-coated answers. Thank you and looking forward to hearing your responses.

I guess it depends on what your schedule would be. As an educator, would you be working a typical 8-5 schedule, or would it be different? Is it OK with your wife that you'll not be home very much? Do you have kids or pets that you want to see? I wouldn't do it unless you and your wife feel OK about you being absent a lot. 90 minutes is ambitious--Google Maps shows it as 1 hour and 7 minutes from Keizer to Hillsboro with no traffic. And there will be traffic at rush hour.

Most days around an hour and fifteen minutes. Some days around three hours. One car isn't going to cut it. Salem public transpertation is not that good. But if she works at State Lands she may get a State car or a direct bus.

I think you are nuts. Most days it will likely take you two hours. You will hit Intel traffic on 26 and 217. Not to mention the natural slowdown around Wilsonville. I think if you want that job you should move to Wilsonville/Sherwood area. You commute to Hillsboro, she commutes to Salem and you get a second car.

Wow, for Silver Fall to be that harsh says something. But I got a dollar that says you will try it anyway. This is the third thread with three different couples seeking to split a four to six hour commute and expecingt to stay employed or together.
