I know that, but what does it have to do with his question? You didn't spell it out for him or other non-Utahns. And the back-and-forth adds nothing to his quesiton.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone.

I've decided to book the downtown Howard Johnson, which is a block away from the EnergySolutions Arena. This hotel is within my budget, and provides a free airport shuttle. I'm definitely going to take the TRAX from the Arena station to and from the stadium.

How safe is the downtown area around the EnergySolutions Arena? Will I be alright walking from the Arena station to the hotel at 11 at night?

You'll be fine, particularly since you'll be surrounded by people. It's not as if you'd be alone on the street. Even if you were, you'd be fine. By the way, where are you from? If we knew, we might have a better sense of the kind of area you're used to.

I'm a New Jersey transplant living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

I'm looking forward to seeing SLC. It will be a nice, quiet change of pace compared to the suburban city life I've been living.

I've walked around that area by myself at that time of night and I've always felt safe. Downtown isn't known for it's crime, really. Also, Trax usually extends their hours for events like concerts, football games, etc. So, getting a hotel downtown and taking trax up to the stadium is the best way to go, I think.

Now, concerning the thing about the nice quite change of pace. Having grown up in Utah I've often heard newcomers say they didn't expect SLC to be as big as it is. It may be a little bit more quiet then what your used to having lived in Dallas and NJ. However, I wouldn't exactly call it nice and quite. It may be more laid back, yes, but the SLC area is fairly urban as well. I guess you'll have to be the judge of that.

If you want nice and quite try and take the bus up one of the Cottonwood canyons, or even Park City, if you have time. Now that will be a nice, quite change of pace!

Hey everyone. I'm thinking about taking a look at the Great Salt Lake the day before the concert.

Will I need a car if I want to visit the lake?

Yes, the lake is about 30 miles west of downtown Salt Lake. Although UTA does go past the lake, I do not believe they stop there.

There are tour busses that go out to the Lake. If you decide to drive, though (which I'd suggest), I would suggest that you drive out to Antelope Island on the causeway that goes out there, instead of going to Saltair (the part of the Lake that is directly west of Salt Lake City). If you go there, it will be about a 20-25 minute drive. If you go to Antelope Island instead, it will be about a 40-45 minute drive. That's a 20 minute time difference, but in my opinion, Antelope Island so far surpasses Saltair that the 20 minutes extra driving time should not even be a factor.
