I will be taking one of my kids to the SLC airport later this month, and because it is such a long drive thought my 11 year and I would make a weekend of it. Any recommendations for a decent clean hotel or motel in a central (ie walkable) area of SLC for sightseeing/shopping for newcomers to the area? Thank you!

There is a nice Crystal Inn downtown that puts you pretty close to everything. Not sure about the rates though. There is even an airport shuttle.

Thank you kaytidid, looks like Red Lion is less expensive, at 91-110/night, anyone know of any even less expensive alternatives? One person warned me there are some real dives in SLC, we are just looking for something decent not too fancy. Thank you!

There is also a Hilton Downtown that runs about 102 a night. About right in the way of what you are looking to pay.

It might be a bit easier if you find a hotel then come and ask about the area the hotel is located in instead. For the most part, if you stay with a chain owned hotel, you should be just fine. Salt Lake is a pretty safe place to be.

This website gives a list of hotels located in the downtown area. It also has some comments for most of the hotels.

Sorry I didn't have more help for a specific hotel.

Is the Red Lion nice? My 11 yo wants a luxury experience, to her that means room service and a pool and amenities. But we stayed at a comfort inn with an indoor pool and it was a run of the mill lower end 65 dollar room and it might as well have been The Plaza Hotel!

If you want a nice experience, go for the Hotel Monaco. It is a bit more than you were looking. I think it said 130.00 a night, but it is that luxury experience that your 11 year old would love. I can vouch for that one personally. I don't know about the Red Lion. It does seem like a very nice hotel. The Red Lion has an outdoor pool, and while the temps would allow for swimming now, most pools close at Labor Day.

Monaco looks great, but like there is no pool?

No. No pool there. Are you set on downtown, or would other parts of the valley be okay? There are several hotels right by the airport that have indoor pools and downtown is a quick drive.

For my daughter, the indoor pool, room-service, and appearance of luxury are important. For me, price, and a view, maybe even a balcony.
