I might be moving to SLC. At first excited. But now people tell me SLC so brutally cold. How bad is it there, in terms of cold? It looks like a magnificent place but is it really cold? How does it compare to WI and MN (if anyone from there?).

I'm not from WI or MN, but from what I've been told, our winters are mild by comparison. Now I personally hate winter with a passion and it lasts far too long for my taste, but we have a very low relative humidity here, so that makes the cold a little more bearable then it would be in a very humid place. That said, I heard on the weather news the other night that we'd just hit 77 or 78 degrees for the first time since last October. That was seven months ago. Here's something I posted recently on a similar thread:

Average Daytime High Temperatures in Salt Lake City:

January 36
February 44
March 52
April 61
May 71
June 82
July 92
August 88
September 78
October 66
November 50
December 37

Average Nighttime Low Temperatures in Salt Lake City:

January 18
February 24
March 31
April 37
May 45
June 55
July 64
August 61
September 51
October 40
November 30
December 21

If these temps are true...March to Nov are very bearable. As long as it's sunny and not really humid.

I am mostly interested in biking/running outdoors and to me it's fine from upper 30s and on (37+).

I'm from Ohio, but have been in MN in the winter. Utah is not near as brutal, IMO. Plus, it's SUNNY here! =) Most snow melts by noon. It usually doesn't get that ugly, dirty look, like it does in Ohio. lol Plus, again, the sun makes me happy, whereas the clouds in Ohio depressed me in the winter alot. We moved here 4+ years ago, & love it! =)

If you can stand the inversions, when the air is dirty and ugly, you'll do okay temperature-wise. Me, I can't handle anything under about 60 degrees, so I'm only comfortable about 5 months out of the year.

Inversions? please help me what is that, the wind? That worries me...I hate biking in wind. Also, I wear contact lenses. Will have to read more about the inversions.

How often do they have those?

Inversion (meteorology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

its not bad in all of SLC, I've heard it is as bad in the southern part of the valley. Its only during the winter, so from ~Oct-April.

Thanks for posting the link.

Based on reading wiki, here is what they say : 'Temperature inversions are extremely unhealthy and can occur weeks at a time'.

So...what do they mean with extremely unhealthy? Is it as bad for you as say smoking? This sounds a little troubling. Also, what other cities in US have this condition? Do people still stay in town if it's so unhealthy? Thank you.

I, myself, have allergies, & have had no ill effects from our inversions. I've heard the warnings for those w/ asthma. I have exercise induced asthma. I also live at 5000'. My driveway is 5012'. lol Not sure how it compares to smoking, but I do know Utah has been the lowest rate in smoking for years. We are still under 10%. I LOVE that about Utah! Among many other things. =)
