What is decent pay to you? My DH is a local truck driver, too.

For nice-ish homes in the 180-200 neighborhood near warehouses, Ogden, Clearfield, West Valley and Brigham City come to mind.

Ogden is most ourdoorsy, not very close to SLC - but has its own downtown center.
Clearfield/Layton are near a lot of warehouses (Freeport Center), lots of military people here too.
West Valley City is also near warehouses and closest to downtown SLC, probably the most young families.
Brigham City is the most child friendly - but I personally wouldn't move to Brigham City because it's small, far away and not very diverse.

There are areas to avoid in Ogden, Clearfield and West Valley, but all three have really nice neighborhoods too.
Check Neighborhood Scout for crime rates. If you click on the cities it will show you the good and the bad neighborhoods.
Another good source is this website's map feature this website's map feature. Scroll down a bit and you can filter on lots of census data. Generally places with higher incomes and less renters will be "better" neighborhoods, though there are certainly exceptions.

84128 is my zip code (west side of West Valley) and I really like it. Relatively high incomes, affordable homes, low % of renters. There are many neighborhoods like this though and you can find them using that map. There is even a filter for "Common industries - Transportation & Warehousing" I imagine if you find a neighborhood with a high number of people working in that industry, it may be something right up your alley.

Your price range will probably put you about 30 miles or so out from Salt Lake City. I'm most familiar with the area to the north of SLC. There are lower cost homes in places just south of Ogden City such as Washington Terrace, Uintah, South Weber and South Ogden, and also in the smaller communities west of the I-15 freeway, such as Syracuse, Roy, Clinton, West Point and Hooper. Tooele, about 20 miles west of Salt Lake may also appeal to you. Typical houses in the $180 to $200K range include 3-bedroom brick ramblers built in the 50's and 60's, or split-levels from the 80's.

Wages for CDL drivers seem pretty consistent with national averages, and I don't think an experienced driver with a good employment record would have a lot of trouble finding local work. Unfortunately your Teamster's affiliation may not be very helpful in finding a job out here - it's a right to work state and the unions have lost a lot of ground.

Just wanted to disagree on one point,

My good condition 4 bedroom, 2 car garage, late 90's rambler cost me in the 180-200 range (in 2013) and I'm only a 15 minute drive to downtown on the 201.

Other than that though, I think elcee is right on. Ogden is a nice area and some of its suburbs would be worth considering. I personally like Salt Lake County better than Weber County, but the OP should consider both, as well as the western Davis County towns (my personal opinion on Davis County is low, but some like it).

We have quite a few different types of homes for that price range, newer (late 90's and newer) homes, too.

well to answer most drivers are in the 50,000-65,000 range. i am sitting at $52,000 now and would like to at least find a comparable job there. but thank you all so much for all the insight. I used to drive for cr. england, so i roughly know the area as much as i got to see from the road. i talked with my wife and i believe we are going to just rent for 6 months to get a personal feel for where we want to buy at. don't like the idea of moving twice but i want to make a formulated decision on something so permanent. we have been looking at the marmalade dist. and some about 10 min. near park city for rentals. we move the beginning of july so we shall see.

I am sure you won't have any trouble finding a driving job in that range. I would look into UPS, Reddaway , and Saia. You can also search the job service board and type in CDL in the search function Department of Workforce Services.
