We are moving from Alaska. We don't have a set date but it will be within the first two weeks of November. We are hoping to be able to find a rental fast that allows pets so we don't have to spend money on hotels.

I'd like to help, but Ogden to Salt Lake is just too much ground to cover!

One thing I do know is that housing prices will go down as you move north or west away from SLC. I'm not sure you'll be able to find a rental in your price range in Salt Lake - especially not in a family-friendly neighborhood with good schools. Commuting to training in SLC from Ogden would be a pain, but maybe worth putting up with if its only a few months. I'm curious as to why you initially mentioned Ogden, rather than SLC?

Because my husband liked Ogden from what he saw doing a little search online. I however prefer SLC. Commuting for school won't be a problem because the school he will be going to offer housing for the duration of the class. I'm not sure though that I would want to commute for work every day. And that's why I'd rather live in SLC or very close by it rather than further out.

I lived in AK for a few years as a kid. I have in laws that live there now.

Will your DH be an OTR driver or will he be looking for a local position?

He wants to be OTR. Local only if he can't get anything OTR. I love Alaska during summertime and how green it is by that's about it. I have been here for 5 years and still just can't feel the state. Not 100% of what to expect from Utah but we are very excited. The only issue we see right now is finding a rental within budget that will allow pets.

Well if he will be OTR, then you really won't have to worry about a commute between SL and Ogden. I would stay focused up that area as rents are not inexpensive in the SL area.

Also, depending on the details, the frontrunner commuter train might make to/from SLC a viable option.

Have you looked at zillow and trulia for a rental? I just got a notice from Trulia about a rental in Washington Terrace for a 4br 2ba for $950
