Hi.....
I am new in town (San Antonio). I am planning to join a community college which offers Social Work. Which so far is the best one?
Thank you all for your advice.

To really get into the playing field, you will need a bachelor's in social work or a related bachelor's degree in the social sciences. For advancement, you will need a Master's.
You can start at the Alamo Colleges (The Alamo Colleges - Homepage) for your basics, then transfer to a 4 year school.

UTSA and OLLU have BSW programs. They also have MSWs. Like Skeet said, you'll probably need to get your BSW via a traditional 4 year school. And just a plug for anyone that searches later on The University of Southern California now has an accredited online MSW program.

I wonder why?
Hope school is going good; how are you liking the online format?

It's actually pretty darn amazing. I just finished a class a few minutes ago. You webcam with the whole class, do group work, etc., etc. etc. It's not like the other programs I research a la phoenix, capella or liberty.

But to keep this one a local track...the UTSA program is way cheaper.

It's much cheaper to get your basics out of the way at a community college and then transfer to UTSA. You may even be able to take most of your courses online. When you go to one Alamo Community College, you can go to all of them (through distance learning at least). I'm with Palo Alto, but I'm taking online courses with SAC because Palo Alto's classes were all filled up. Just about any of them should offer an associate of arts in social work. Local community college degrees are usually easy to transfer to local universities, but you should check with the university you're planning to attend first. I am planning on transferring to University of Houston Victoria, Sam Houston University, or University of Texas Telecampus because they're fairly cheap and offer online degree or degree completion programs in the field I'm in. Here, only the Incarnate Word (and maybe OLLU) offers online degree completion programs and they're pretty expensive.

If attending community college be sure to get on a 2+2 program so you do not take any unnecessary classes which waste time and money. They will know exactly what credits you need at the community college level and what more you will need once at the university level.

I just checked and San Antonio College, Palo Alto, and St. Philip's offer either social work or pre-social work degree programs. St. Philip's website says it has an articulation agreement with all of these schools:

Capella University
Our Lady of the Lake University
Park University
Regis University
St. Mary’s University
Texas A&M Corpus Christi
Texas A&M Kingsville-San Antonio
Texas State Technical College Waco - Fuel Cell Technology
University of Houston
University of Texas @ Brownsville and Texas Southmost College
University of Texas @ Dallas
University of Texas @ San Antonio
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center @ Dallas
University of Texas Health Science Center for Medical Laboratory
University of Texas Medical Branch @ Galveston for Clinical Laboratory
University of the Incarnate Word
Wayland Baptist University
Wiley College

But avoid the for-profit schools.
