My mom will be moving to San Antonio this week and I would love to be able to recommend some places where she can meet people in her age group-she is 54.
She will probably try to find a good Catholic church, so if anyone wants to recommend one near USAA, that would be helpful. The only one I've personally been to is St. Francis on De Zavala, but I do not worship there. My mom is easy going and funny, has a small dog, loves music and going to the movies, cooking (she is diabetic), reading-normal things. Book clubs, dog clubs, groups of people who like to go to outdoor markets, cooking clubs, things like that would be great.

Meetup.com is a great place for older folks to get to know people and become involved in activities that interest them. I highly recommend these two meetups

The San Antonio Nature Hounds (San Antonio, TX) - Meetup.com . People are VERY friendly and of ALL age groups. The dogs love socializing and I met a lot of really nice people through these two groups (including some from right here on CD-SA!). We've been missing the walks and doggie gatherings while my dog is recovering from heartworm treatments, but once she's back up to speed, we'll both be back out with the pack!

Whatever to the other messages. Have your mom contact Newcomers of San Antonio. You can join (small annual membership fee) when you are new to the city - for the first two years. No age requirement it tends to be women 40 and up and the group is about 350-400 strong. She would fit right in. It's a great way to meet other women and to learn about the city. She will probably try to find a good Catholic church, so if anyone wants to recommend one near USAA, that would be helpful. The only one I've personally been to is St. Francis on De Zavala, but I do not worship there. My mom is easy going and funny, has a small dog, loves music and going to the movies, cooking (she is diabetic), reading-normal things. Book clubs, dog clubs, groups of people who like to go to outdoor markets, cooking clubs, things like that would be great.
