State Sen. Jeff Wentworth (R-San Antonio) hopes to axe tuition assistance for low-income students he sees as unfairly paid for by the struggling families of other students. Senate Bill 298 would eliminate the set-aside portion of tuition revenue dedicated to student financial assistance at higher education institutions.

I can guarantee you that if THECB set-asides are eliminated, access to higher education will be significantly reduced to many worthy students who might otherwise not attend. It won't cause tuition rates to fall, it will only increase Federal Direct loans, and that's the next economic downfall to our country, as you will see in the forthcoming year. Wait for the "Pop!" sound when that bubble breaks.

Texas is planning on eliminating from 8,000 to over 9,000 government jobs to deal with the now expected $27 billion deficit, including those at public universities and not including those at public school districts. Dewhurst is saying that many of these positions will be vacancies. If you're in a hard to find degree program with very little students, expect those professors to be gone.

I agree. It is definitely a two-way street. The issue is that there are not many high paying jobs here because there are not enough highly educated professionals. And are not many highly educated professionals here because there are not many high paying jobs.

Perhaps this explains why San Antonio is the 2nd dumbest city in America:

If children are malnourished their first few years of life, their IQ potential is substantially reduced. Even an overweight child can be malnourished in the sense they aren't consuming enough necessary nutrients.

Pretty much... college loans are more or less risk free because they can't be discharged so you have a sort of unlimited amount of money available to schools in the form of tuition and fees. Whatever they want to charge students, loans will be available to supply. Bring risk and one's future ability to pay it back into the equation and funding will drop, but tuition and fees will have to turn back to what the market will now bear.

I saw a lot of skinny and fat people from all over the World getting engineering degrees.
Including countries such as Botswana, Kenya, Ethiopia and many others.
