Electricity Cost from CPS Energy (Houston, Dallas: homes, neighborhood, buy)

So CPS Energy is a monopoly in town, right? Well, what's the cost per kilowatt-hour of electricity? Is it standard all over town, or does it depend by zip code or by neighborhood?

I really don't know, so I decided to come to the best place to ask weird, annoying questions: City-Data!

The rates are standard across their service area, but there is a difference between residential and commercial rates.

Most City of San Antonio residents living in single family homes have an extra $18.74 tacked on to their bill for solid waste services. Residents living outside the City, or those inside that do not receive garbage/recycling pickup from the City of San Antonio do not have this charge on their CPS bill. Other than that, all residential customers should be paying the same rate for gas/electricity.

And what is that rate? Does anyone know, by any chance? How many pennies on the kilowatt-hour?

On my most recent bill, the Energy Charge, Fuel Adjustment, and Regulatory Adjustment total $0.07269/kWh. There is an $8.25 Service Availablity Charge on top of that.

The Service Availability Charge is a fixed amount, the Energy Charge and Regulatory Adjustment rates haven't changed for at least the last few months. Only the Fuel Adjustment rate fluctuates. Sometimes there may be a "Peak Capacity Charge"; I think I had that one at least one month this past summer.

7.269 cents per kilowatt-hour! Sounds great! The reason that I was talking about it is because we're getting an electric car, so obviously it is in my interest to have the electricity be as cheap as possible.

Read somewhere the average in America is 12 cents. Cheap as 6 cents in North Dakota (why North Dakota?!) to as much as 26 cents in Hawaii!!! HOW?! Wow. Bet they buy a lot of candles!

The cost varies depending on the time of the year. In the winter, it is ~8 cents/KwH. In the summer, it can be as high as 10-11 cents/KwH... and this will most likely go up in the future. The reason is that depending on the fuel mix CPS uses in a given month based on demand (Coal, Gas, Nuclear, Wind, Solar), the base rates are adjusted.

They usually post the blended rate on their homepage on the right side toward the bottom... for November 2010 it is 8.1 cents/KwH.
