If you know of good, safe, familiy friendly areas of town to buy a home in San Antonio, would you please share? Also areas of town to avoid. For a military family relocating, I thank you in advance! Can't wait to get out of the SNOW!

You won't be alone,
because there's a lot of cars going around here with Alaska license plates.

Do schools matter?

What's your price range for a house?

The answers to both of those questions will be helpful for more specific recommendations, since we know that one of you is commuting to Lackland. Living near Lackland is not particularly desirable.

Having PCS'd here twice, both times from overseas; and I would focusing on anywhere in the blue area for an easy commute to base, good shopping and dining, good schools, and relatively safe neighborhoods...

Great map! I'm not sure I'd go that far east of I-10; Helotes would probably be as far east as I would go because 1604 can be a mess at rush hour. Since I moved near downtown, I never see traffic regularly anymore and it's a blessing.

I'd tend to agree with ya, but since I work with some folks that live up in that area (and even beyond it), I thought I'd include 'em!

I usually avoid the 1604 mess by going in and leaving work earlier than most, but I may be switching jobs in a few months and I have no idea of what kind of schedule I might have. If I have to battle traffic, that will suck!

Cheers! M2

The link I sent you in the DM is in the "blue area" of the map that M2 put up just above this post.

You drive to Fair Oaks from Lackland every weekday for work? Are they giving you a flexible work schedule? That's some serious time you're putting in for commute, especially if you're doing it during rush hour! How long have you been doing this? I get tired just driving from 1604/i10 to Fair Oaks, lol.

Had a neighbor that used to drive from his home in Sisterdale (north of Boerne) to Lackland for work. Crazy crazy.

Sounds like stereotyping. I live in the 78245 zip code and we have a much lower risk of property crime than Fair Oaks. The NISD has good ratings too: Accountability : Northside Independent School District - San Antonio, TX 78238
