It's expected to be only partly cloudy tonight, so hopefully it will be clear enough to view the "supermoon" we are having this evening...

Quote:
Thanks to a fluke of orbital mechanics that brings the moon closer to Earth than that it has been in more than 18 years, the biggest full moon of 2011 will occur on Saturday, leading some observers to dub it a "supermoon."

On Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the moon will arrive at its closest point to the Earth in 2011: a distance of 221,565 miles (356,575 kilometers) away. And only 50 minutes earlier, the moon will officially be full. At its peak, the supermoon of March may appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than lesser full moons. (Full story (http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20110318/sc_space/supermoonrisesbiggestfullmoonin18yearsoccurssaturd aynight - broken link))
Although the article goes on to state that the difference may not be overly huge, the moon hasn't been this close to the Earth since March 1993 so it's worth looking for!

Also, NASA stressed that this "supermoon" did and will not cause any natural disasters, such as the Japan earthquake!

Cheers! M2

I was outside last night, around 9, and really caught eye of the moon. I was swinging my son on our swing set and he was drawn to it also. it was a beautiful sight =)

Well, the moon is starting to rise to the east; it's bigger than usual but not overly dramatic. Still, I can't wait until it clears the treeline so I can try and get some pics!

Cheers! M2

Neighbor next door set up this giant Meade 200X telescope and we could even see craters on the moon with it. Came over up the horizon about 9pm and should be high in the sky soon.

The pictures I tried to take with my digital camera didn't capture the detail of the moon too well...

But I shot a quick 4-minute time-lapse video of the clouds going by the supermoon that was pretty cool, I'll post once I get it uploaded to U-tube.

If anyone else got photos and/or video of it, please post 'em up!

Cheers! M2

You're lying. It was barely in the horizon when you made that post.

Are you trying to discourage others from seeing it?
