When you rent a car, you are responsible for the car. Same rules should apply for the bike.

Whenever I rented a car, I didn't stop to buy a soda while leaving the keys in the ignition.

The program hasn't even started yet. Come on naysayers, give it a chance to prove itself. We can't have the attitude that nothing will work before trying it out or this city will never get anywhere.

I see what you mean.

From the program's FAQ: "During the time you have a bike, you are responsible for the bike, as detailed in the Terms and Conditions. <snip> You may be liable up to $1,000 if a bike is stolen or lost while in your possession (see User Agreement)."

If you can't keep track of a bicycle for 30 minutes, you might have bigger issues.

OTOH, there's the old saying "Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

I've lived in SA for 14 years (on June 26 but who's counting? ) and have never had a car stolen, nor do I know anyone who's had a car stolen. Who are you hanging out with and where are they going that they keep getting their cars stolen?!?

I had 3 stolen over a period of less than 10 years - all out of my NS driveways. But that's neither here nor there. My point (which some haven't stopped to think about, because we're too busy being giddy over bicycles being in a few locations in a city with 100+ degree summer days) is that there's a significant number of folks who wake up thinking how they can "get over" on us, the honest citizen. Call me what you will, but come back 12 months after the roll-out and tell me the results.
I'm really not trying to be a naysayer - what I AM trying to be is a realist. But lest you think I'm just an idiot spouting nonsense...here's what a 60-second googling session turned up...

French Ideal of Bicycle-Sharing Meets Reality - NYTimes.com

Bicycle sharing system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No easy ride for bike programs - USATODAY.com

Is it all doom and gloom? Certainly not - but given the tendency of so many things one would think of little value to be stolen, I doubt things will be any different with this. It would be nice for it to succeed - but it'd be nice for the bank to forgive my mortgage, too.....;D

Let's give it a shot. This is a downtown-centric thing and since the renter assumes full liability for the rental, as with any other rental in life, I'm pretty sure folks will know what they're possibly getting themselves into.

I've had a bike, car and scooter all while living in Southtown and have never had issue with any of them being stolen.

Furthermore, anything that encourages people to ride and burn some calories is a very good thing for this city.

And I give it a maximum of 3 months before one of the TV stations' investigative teams airs a sob story from someone whose rental bike was stolen, resulting in a big bill they can't afford to cover the loss.

It isn't pessimism that will ultimately kill this program. If I'm wrong, feel free to point that out in March 2012.

The people doing it are not going to be your average person who cries to the TV stations, for the most part. Those likely to use this program are those likely to take responsibility. The types you describe aren't going to ride a bike, period.

What's with all the Negative Nellies? Give it a chance to work.
