Ok I have got the news I have dreaded from my A/C guy that he is suggesting I replace my A/C Unit within the next 2 years. Anyone have any ballpark figures what it might cost to replace both the inside and outside unit for a 2000 square foot house? I have a Centex home so the original A/C I have now is about the size of a Mini Fridge so you can imagine it is always running trying to cool down a 2 story house.
Any input is helpful.
Thanks

I'm sure someone will say they got a better price then I did, but I went for high energy efficiency and several other energy upgrades to the house.

Depending on the east/west orientation of the home and window locations, you're probably looking at a 3.5 ton unit. I'd suggest researching the net for the brand that's right for you. I have replaced mine at home with a RUUD unit because I have gas heat and the heat exchanger came with a 10 year warranty. The scroll pump in the unit outside also has a 10 year warranty. I have used Cook-Jones A/C for decades and have found Micheal Jones to be honest and he works on your house like he would his very own. Great guy and I would suggest getting a quote from him and others as well. Buy as much SEER as you can afford if you think that you are going to be in the house for the next 10 years. Research tax credits for the newer unit as well as CPS for possible energy credits.

I mentioned the gas energy in my house as most of the newer homes do not have gas in the subdivisions. Builders limit their liability by using clean electrical energy rather than gas even though gas is the more efficient heat. Builders don't want to hear that a family is in the hospital from CO2 poisoning from a faulty vent installed by the sub. If you have a heat pump, learn what it is and how it works. In a heat pump, SEER is everything.

For a quality brand with a 10 years parts/labor warranty between $4K to $6K. Have reputable company come out and measure what what you should have in your home. Please see the link I posted recently on this same topic.
Of course some bozo on here is going to say they have someone that can do it for half of that.

And I generally will stay away from the guys that have full page/half page yellow book advertising. Someone is paying the bill for that.

Just had mine replaced in March, old one was 14yrs. Wow 8K+. 3.5 ton for 2800 sq ft home, one story. Very nice now. I think it is a 14seer+. something like that. got almost $450 energy credits from CPS. Have not made a electricity payment since then, probably won't make one next month either.

I think you overpaid. My Mom just had a 3 ton 16 seer Trane installed for $5,800 (complete job, inside and outside units) and that was the price before the federal & CPS rebates.
I think you got Taken.

if you get quotes make sure you they give you the model number of the unit. then google it.
dont be afraid to buy the unit yourself online, and just have someone install it

Goodman only have a 10 year *Limited* parts warranty. Nothing on Labor.
Trane & Carrier have 10 years, all parts, all labor warranty.

To each their own.
