Will you have a car by the time you need to go to Fort Sam? or will you need to be able to get there on the bus?

There are a lot of apartments on Austin Highway which is near Fort Sam. Austin Highway didn't used to be a nice street to live on, but they've done a lot to revitalize the area in the last few years. I don't have any personal experience with the apartments there, but maybe someone else here does. One advantage to living there would be that there's a bus that goes downtown if you go one direction, and to the mall if you go the other.

Will your child be going to school soon? That might make some difference in selecting the right area, if you're still planning to be there when your child starts school.

Stoneleigh Apartments 2626 Thousand Oaks Dr. There is an HEB within walking distance, as well as a daycare. There's a Bill Millers, Taco Bell, 99Cent Store, Bealls, Taco Cabana, in that same shopping center, as well as other places. Northwoods Shopping center is near. I lived there for a few years and the rent was $650 for a 1 bedroom, that was 4 years ago. there are also other apartment complexes right in that area, I just have experience with Stoneleigh, which by the way, is a small complex and consistant management.

There is a new apartment complex on Austin Hwy. Walking distance to HEB and Walmart. Not sure about day care. Bus stop across the street. Very close to Fort Sam.

I used to live on Eisenhauer and Vandiver in the late 90s and early 2000s. There are two apartment complexes in that area under the same owner and management. There are also some condos by Harry Wurzbach and Eisenhauer. That area was nice and safe. The trashy part is close to the hotels that are probably going to be torn down soon and near Rainbow and Deerwood. The apartment complex by Wendy's on Austin Hwy looks nice, but I don't know anything about it.
