Since San Antonio has such a massive amount of stray & owner surrendered animals being euthanized daily, I thought I would share some info on free services for Spay & Neuter

The San Antonio Humane Society is spaying/neutering Pit Bulls and Pit Bull Mixes for FREE, made possible by a grant from PetSmart Charities®. Our goal is to spay/neuter 1,000 Pit Bulls and Pit Bull Mixes within a one year period. In addition to the surgery, all Pit Bulls and Pit Bull Mixes receive a free rabies shot and microchip*. A free spay/neuter surgery will not only help in our efforts to put an end to the San Antonio pet overpopulation, but it helps your dog live a healthier and happier life. Together we can achieve our goal of ensuring that every dog born has a home waiting for them.

May 7th, 2012 was an historic day for San Antonio's Community Cats as $700,000 was awarded to ACS as a grant to spay/neuter, vaccinate and ear-tip 3,500 of our free-roaming cats! The Best Friends grant was provided through PetSmart Charities. The surgeries will be done at SpaySA.
San Antonio was one of two cities in the country to receive this grant. We are very fortunate to have this type of funding and support from the city! Now we all need to pull together as a community to get this done! Help is needed for the "TNR" part.

i wish this would encourage more pit bull owners to have their dogs altered. however, like a certain % of the population in SA that seems to think drunk driving is ok, a much bigger % think owning a pit is macho and getting them altered is girly.

This is such a great post. I really wish people would spay and neuter their pets, there are so many low cost options that there's not much of an excuse not to. I also wish people would stop dumping pets, with craigslist one can get rid of a pet in a more humane way and it's free to post. In my neighborhood people have dumped so many dogs that almost all the dogs here owned by neighbors are animals that have been dumped. We just took one in about a month ago that had been dumped.

My husband found an abandoned pit bull pup on the West side. This is good info to know! She is super cute, but since we already have 4 dogs/1 cat (all rescued/found pets), we need to find a home for her. Anyone on CD SA interested? Just message me.

Awesome info, thanks for sharing!!! I am such a believer in responsible pet ownership!!

So a question about the neutering of pitties. I work in a low income area of town and most pet owners are NOT responsible. It's very sad.... lots of litters of kittens and puppies with no home. My office has rescued and rehomed several, but sadly it is an ongoing issue that will never end.

The home behind my office has a pit bull. He is about 1 year old and the sweetest and smartest dog! Our entire office has fallen in love with him. We'll call him Rascal. He is not neutered. His owners let him roam the streets and he likes to spend his days in our warehouse until about 4:00 each day. Then he wanders home. He's a great dog and we all want him but just can't. We all have dogs and adding another isn't possible.

We asked his owners if we could neuter him at our cost and they said no; they want to breed him

However, we WANT to get him neutered (and we would actually love to see him rehomed). We know that not only will it prevent more pitties (the last thing this city needs!!) but it's good for Rascal's health.

Is there anything we can do to have him neutered? We certainly do not want to see him picked up and/or euthanized by animal control. But we also don't want anymore pittie pups brought into this world.

Such a difficult situation. Too many sweet animals and not enough good homes.

Maybe get in touch with San Antonio Pets Alive (you can find them on Facebook) to see if they can provide some advice?

I wish it wasn't just pitts. You know ppl will not take their pitts due to what was said above so it's a waste. Why not let more responsible pet owners get a chance as well?

Thanks everyone for the positive responses. I am just an animal lover and not affiliate with any local organizations. I will try to keep thread updated as there is so many services for pet owners that no one ever finds out about.

Here's one for a lot more people, not just the pit owners. The ADL is offering free spay or neuter services for pets of people who live in these zip codes: 78201, 78207, 78210, 78213, 78221, 78223, 78227, 78228, 78229, 78237, 78242, 78245, 78250 and 78251 Proof of rabies vaccine is required, otherwise you will have to pay $10 to get the rabies vaccine. To schedule an appointment, call 210-655-1481, ext. 104.

I had my dog spayed there last year when they were running a $10 special for my zip code. They do a great job. One thing though, they don't provide the e-collar so you'll probably have to buy one for $20 from the pet store. That's still a great deal, though.
