I am a stay at home wife and mom. My husband just got orders to Fort Sam Tx. (San Antonio) We are due there by Aug. I have been looking for forever for a place to rent that will accept my 2 pitbull dogs. I've called property manager after property manager. No one seems to want to help because of my dogs. I can't seem to come up with anything!! Other than some how magically getting in touch with a landlord directly.
I never thought it would been so hard to find a place for me and my family to rent. We have been living in our first home we bought with never the need or know about the restrictions of pitbulls. This is really concerning me!! If anyone can help, give tips or advice to what or how to go about this process- the info would be much appreciated!!!

If my post bothers some. Please feel free to disregard. Please don't post any hateful or demeaning comments. Thanks in advance!!

Are you planning on buying after renting here? If you are, can you kennel them while you are doing so?

If you're looking for an apartment, call an apartment locator. They will know which complexes will allow pit bulls.

san antonio is very anti-pitbull, i think one just attacked someone last month.

you are in for an upward battle, so best of luck. I would suggest looking for a house to rent. or try a apartment locator, they are free.

I am no help at all, just want to say good luck. I have never met a pittie that wasn't a cuddle bug and it's so sad that they have such a bad rap due to some horrific dog owners. Best of luck to you!!

In addition to apartment locators, you might also want to look into townhome, duplex, fourplex, condo, and house rentals. I live by a bunch of townhomes and fourplexes with various owners and they don't seem to care about dog breeds.

I've never used an apartment locator, but that sounds like one option to try.

The other would be to find a realtor to help you find a house to rent.

When we moved here, we tried to find a house to rent on our own but kept finding ones that didn't accept our Akita.

We stumbled upon a realtor that offered to help us find a rental home and she found us several options.

It seems that a lot of HOAs prohibit those breeds, so I would try looking for houses to rent that are not in an HOA, as that may be part of the reason so many places don't allow them.

Keep in mind that the Landlord's insurance company will often ask if there are dangerous breeds on premises, and will either decline coverage or charge more if there are. So, it's not just that the Landlord doesn't like your dog or doesn't believe you when you say that they are well behaved. They often just don't have a choice.

This is EXACTLY the reason it's so tough to find one. Insurance won't cover many times and unfortunately today, people like to sue, so if a kid gets bitten by a pit on MY property, even though it's not MY pit, guess who gets dragged into court.

Yes, most of them are great dogs. But like many dogs, sometimes they bite someone. With a pit a simple bite can be devastating, as they're so strong. And now that you've got a pack of pits roaming around LA and they've already killed someone, it's going to get harder and harder.

They ARE a dangerous breed and unfortunately this just kind of goes along with the territory.
