If you are wanting a full meal it may not work out but if you want to try different places with an appetizer and a drink go for it.

Wild Fish (seafood)
Piatti's (Italian)
Zinc (only m-f)
Drews
Luce (Italian)
Cover 3 - opens June 28
Lupe Tortilla (only m-f)
Kona Grill (only m-f)
Mortons (not Saturday)
Landrys
Leon Springs Grill
Perry's (only m-f)

A lot of these places have their HH menus on their websites. Drews has their pizzas which I like. Landry's has fish tacos.

tons more places around town.
Did you bother to read the title of thread or his post?

Although these places listed above are good they are way too expensive and they are chain restaurants.

Right off Occonor and IH35 there is a hole in the wall place called Taqueria Chalapa Jalisco
Taqueria Chapala Jalisco - Northeast Side - San Antonio | Urbanspoon

Taco Garage right off 410 and Broadway
Taco Garage - Alamo Heights - San Antonio | Urbanspoon

Also great for your budget, most will be less expensive than any restaurant mentioned in this thread so far
Thank you for that tip! At least I speak Spanish too so I'll be on the lookout for that.

OH we do want to go to one bbq place in each city during our two week stay in Texas. I just don't want it to be eating red meat everyday twice a day. I've heard of the Salt Lick, which we are going to check out, but I think it's in Austin.

Yes, the Salt Lick is in Austin. We found it expensive ($80 for 4 plates and teas!) and dry for our tastes, but, BBQ is a personal choice

In San Antonio, we like Rudy's.

The only Salt Lick in Austin is at the airport.

From a San Antonio POV, Driftwood and Round Rock are Austin "area". Long and short of it is that it's not in San Antonio, as the OP suspected.

You also have to watch out for food poisoning.

Yeah it can be a roll of the dice.

If you're going to be inside the loop, I'd head for Ray's Drive Inn on the near West side (19th and Guadalupe) -- they claim to be the inventor of puffy tacos. I know they aren't the only ones making that claim but at any rate their puffy tacos are really good IMO, and it is cheap. They have puffy tacos with beans only if you don't want beef or chicken; my son used to order them that way all the time because he's kind of quasi-vegetarian.

Cheese enchiladas are good too. Service can be a little slow, atmosphere is a little ... weird... for lack of a better term. Tacky (but interesting) decor and a LOUD TV if you sit in the back. There is a car back there, an entire car, in the back section, and they don't stop all the people who come in off the street trying to sell you stuff (DVDs, perfume, candy) which can be annoying.

At any rate I can mostly vouch for the safety, we lived nearby for about five years and ate there regularly, five of us, no issues ever with anyone getting sick.

Oh if you go, it is cash only. There is an ATM inside if I remember right. I gotta quit coming to this thread hungry!
