Has anyone noticed the big price increase at Bill Miller's? I usually get a Rancher Plate, and tea. With tax it would come to $9.84. Today I went, and that same plate cost $12.02! The girl at the register explained the price of beef went up a lot, but I got a half a chicken on my plate! That's more than a 20% increase. That's too much. I won't be frequenting Bill Miller's nearly as much anymore. I used to go at least once a week.

Yep, that's ridiculous! But, hell what isn't these days? That would have gotten the family dinner not long ago. Maybe the bigger one. I remember when a chopped bbq on a bun was 35 cents and packed. Maybe cheaper than that.

Yeah, I noticed it last week, too. Nothing unusual about a price increase, but this time the increase seemed extra-hefty. Looks like I'm not the only one who got a case of sticker shock. Rodeo plate is now $14.00 + tax (no drink included), large family order is $28.95. I think the tea is probably the only thing that didn't increase.

Perhaps the drought played a part in their price increase but 20% does seem too high. I remember when a regular plate at Bill Miller's was only $3.10.

BBQ in general has gotten ridiculous.
Not that long ago, BBQ was cheap...one reason it became popular. The butchers in the old days threw out the brisket and fajitas...too tough to cook. Now, people treat it as a delicacy.

Every BBQ joint around thinks that their meat is so unique and special, that they can charge outrageous prices for it. The more popular it became, the more the price went up.

I remember the first time I went to Rudy's....years ago when it first opened in Leon Springs. I couldn't believe what you had to pay for what you were served. Now it's probably double that.

Tacos, and Mexican food in general, the same thing.
12 bucks for a plate of so-so BBQ? I'll pass.

Well, BBQ places probably understand that they can charge that because the people who eat that kind of food feel like they have to have it, and it's too much of a pain for them to make it at home. I doubt that they would have much price leverage with bean and cheese breakfast tacos.

It's a lot cheaper to make bean and cheese tacos. For $25, I could probably make 150 bean and cheese tacos. The same $25 would buy 10lbs brisket which would yield about 6lbs cooked. So I could make 12 brisket plates (the big kind we're talking about at Bill Millers) or 24 poor boys (where they hide the fatty parts of the brisket). So if I sold my tacos for a dollar each, that would be $150. To make that much from the brisket, I'd need to charge $12.50/plate or $6.25/sandwich.

"Hedgehog Mom," your post makes perfect sense. That's why I said they would NOT have much price leverage (i.e., ability to jack up prices) selling the cheap-and-easy-to-prepare-at-home tacos. There's more involved than the price of the ingredients.

It's going to get worse. This is getting very little attention:
