I still want to try other restaurants, ie. like Matamoros at IH 10 and De Zavala, and Pasion and Blanco and 1604. Has anyone tried those two? What did you think?
Matamoros was awesome. Just not there enchiladas. But there queso and there qusadillias <(SP) were superb. Another good place not your typical tex-mex it Tiagos.

Pasion is very good, but someone in another thread said that it will be closing permanently soon.

Seriously, I am miffed by the whole 'tex-mex' thing. My Husband, son and I moved here (from the west coast) expecting this great tex-mex food. I have not found it, I gave up. every place I have tried is basic and standard. Someone said cookie cutter, sounds about right.

Maybe I just don't like tex-mex, nothing exciting. I tended to like the freshness and coolness of the baja mexican I ate in so-cal. Big salads, big veggies, fresh salsa and vinigarettes, lite sauces, fish....

My 3yr old did not like it either...so much for kid friendly

Maybe one day I'll have the energy to give it another shot, you know if I have $$ I don't mind wasting.

They tried Baja style mexican food a few years back..and they all closed down. People didn't take to fish tacos. And fresh lite salads don't go over well in SA. Most of the people in SA can't go one meal that does have a healthy serving of Manteca (Lard) in it.

You might want to try El Mirasol or La Fogota. They are tex mex, but have some lighter seafood type items people from CA prefer.

You might also try:
Los Barrios or Hacienda (same owner)
Panchitos

I agree with FitMommy....we moved here from Washington State in May and haven't really found any tex-mex places we truly enjoy. We like to eat healthy (my husband is in the healthcare profession...) and the heavy meals at most Mexican restaurants we've tried so far have left us feeling sick. Maybe "Tex-mex" isn't our thing either. I'd prefer to see alot more salads and veggies on my plate.

No offense, San Antonio....

I had a very good experience at Mamacita's on 10, my daughter however was not so happy that we had to wait so long to get seated. I heard Passion on 1604 will be closing down for renovations but then opening up again once completed. He is making too much money to close down permanently.

Default Amorcitos is Great

Just returned from dinner for 12 at Amorcitos. I made the reservation and asked if I could bring a birthday cake for my granddaughter. They took my cake to the kitchen and refrigerated it for me, lit the candles and brought it out and sang Happy Birthday to her along with us. Our waiter was impecable! The food was delicious. Liked the chips and both salsas, one an avacado base and the other a tomato base. We all had different dishes, mahi mahi, shrimp, chalupas, enchiladas, salads, along with various drinks both alcoholic and non. It was all very good. Nice varied menu and reasonable prices for the quality of the food. We will definitely return!

That just isn't tex-mex. You can't expect tex-mex to be baja mexican, because they just aren't the same. I enjoy different kinds of mexican food. When I'm in Florida or California or Colorado, I don't expect for the mexican food there to taste the same as it does in Texas. I've had good mexican food in those three state, even though it wasn't like what I had in Texas.

But fish tacos...ewww...

I like Tex-Mex and I like fish tacos. But I agree that our traditional Tex-Mex is definitely not California style or Colorado style!
BTW, Pasion did close and has reopened as a steak house. There are now 2 steakhouses in the Stone Oak area. I am really sorry he chose to reopen as a steak house as his original Pasion was delicious and fun!
