Maybe halfway between Austin and Dallas you might see both cities glow of light upon the heavens.
Say about 2500 feet elevation up on top of a Hill country Hill.
One can only see 20 miles at sea level due to the curvature of the earth.

Straight line distance from Main Plaza in San Antonio to the State Capitol in Austin is slightly over 74 miles. Close 'nuff.
Curvature of the Earth prevents one from seeing another city from that distance from the roof of a hotel.

I am not really sure what your point is. My data is roughly correct. 8 inches of curve per mile does not throw off my round approximation.
