An aircraft arriving on 13 flies at 4000' while paralleling the runway. Once the controller turns the aircraft on base(basically N to W), the aircraft will be descended to 3000'.

Yes, those are the rules. Some are clearly VFR over my house, or were operating with special permission to deviate. Mostly the business jets. Fortunately no planes of any kind over my house in months. Quite a change from the past four years.

Just before the big storm rolling in from the north yesterday, one big plane passed over my house on the old route. So they still know how. First one in a couple months.

I live pretty close to the ALAMO outer marker which is actually located just west of NW Military between 1604 and Eisenhower Park. You can see the antenna and fenced off area on the left if traveling north on NW Military. It's practically directly across the street from the new Cornerstone Christian Campus.

Aircraft should be at about 2800 feet on the glidepath at that location.

You can read the approach plate here. https://aeronav.faa.gov/d-tpp/1906/00369IL13R.PDF

Question: Approaching aircraft pass more or less right over my house on the 308 heading before turning for 13. My iPhone and Google Earth put my house’s elevation at 1,100’. So when they pass over my house they may be at 4,000’ but only 2,900’ overhead. Right? Just wondering.

Yes, that is correct.

The elevation of SAT is 809'. Being further north, you very likely could be at 1100'. Boerne Stage airport is just west of Boerne. Its elevation is 1384'.

Thanks. I’m fairly good with distance and was pretty sure the planes passing over our house weren’t 4,000’ above our level. Some flights wouldn’t have to be a lot lower for us to see faces. The lower flights seem to be the ones on a more direct 260-270 heading.

On a 260-270 heading, the aircraft would have been descended to 3000' and
remain there until descending to 2800' over Alamo.
