I'm looking for a older, established neighborhood with good schools commuting distance to the base? Budget doesn't matter since I'll be renting at first.

Budget could be between $600 and $9,500+. Still doesn't matter?

Looking for a house. Something older with more charm than all of the new cookie cutter developments.

You may want to search the forum for "Lackland." These types of posts are very popular. I'm assuming is PCSing time and you will not be the only one with similar questions coming along.

I did but the neighborhoods suggested were new homes not older and established.

When I was younger (in the early 90s) there were a handful of families that worked at Lackland and lived in the Shavano Ridge area. It would probably be about a 30 minute commute. The zip code is 78230 and 78249. You may want to try that area. 78240 may also work.

Old, established with great schools? Perhaps Alamo Heights/Terrell Hills area?
Still would like to know how many bedrooms/house size and budget.

I like the homes in Shavano Ridge but the schools outside of the high school are not very good according to great schools.

Don't need a big house. Schools and commute are most important.

I noticed that recently. The further you go into Shavano Park the better the schools get. FWIW, I think Locke Hill and Hobby pull from some lower income areas and are a more diverse student population. They are still great schools with great parent involvement and dedicated teachers. FWIW, I went to Locke Hill in the early 90s and up until maybe 4 years ago both my Kinder teacher AND my 5th grade teacher were still teaching there. There's a few teachers still around that were there when i was there. If you move over to the other side of ten you may go to a different middle school, Rawlinson, but the elementary is a title I school (look into that as you may). I don't believe Locke Hill or Hobby are Title I.
