If you have out of town company and you want to take them to the Mexican restaurant that shows them the real San Antonio, where would you take them?

Everyone told us we MUST go to Mi Tierra. I’ll admit it has personality, but to be honest it’s kind of a tourist spot. I’ll leave it up to you whether that’s something you’d want for your guests.

La Fogata has more character than Mi Tierra and not as tourist-y since it isn't that close to downtown.

So Luna- not as much TexMex, more authentic food, but not the show of Mi Tierra.

For us, it would be:

El Chaparral
15103 Bandera Hwy
Helotes, TX

https://www.elchaparral.com/

They have the atmosphere AND dishes to make you glad you came, IMO. We used to tell folks that they "should" do Mi Tierra while in town, but not any longer. We went this past summer, and I was NEVER so disappointed in a restaurant since I can remember. Been there many times over the years, and always found it crowded w/tourists and pricey, but the food was right on. No longer - it's bland as if it came out of a can. Won't be back.

All great restaurants mentioned above, but they are very much alike. El Mirasol (two locations) and SoLuna are exactly the same (same owner), and La Fogata feels just like them. I'd pick Garcia's or Ray's Drive-in for something uniquely San Antonio. Carintas Lonja is the new kid on the block.

My pick would be Rosario's - Southtown location.
Any of the Los Barrios family of restaurants.

I like Paloma Blanca (on Broadway) and Rosario's (although it's too loud for me). Was impressed by Tlahco.

For tacos: La Salsita, Tlahco.

Mi Tierra - obnoxious, overrated.
