Scuzzi and Paesano's are both very good and are pretty close by (about a mile or so east on 1604).

Thanks again to all who responded.

I usually just feed Longhorns some crayons......and run!

If it's steak and some raw oysters...try The Red Barn on N. New Braunfels.

Red Barn was a major disappointment to me last time I went. I went to relieve the memories of my times there with family when I was a kid but it wasn't the same as I remembered from long ago. Food is bad, Service is bad.... The tables felt coated in sticky grease which made me have to peel my arms off every time I placed them on the table.

For that kind of atmosphere and food....I would just go to Hungry Farmer.

We've had one bad experience there in all the years we've gone - that was last year right after SA started allowing limited restaurant re-opening. The steaks just weren't on point. They comped the entire meal AND gave us our choice of desserts on the house. Every time we've been back since, they were excellent. And we've been with my sister and BIL, who are VERY picky on food, service and cleanliness - no complaints from them.

Sorry your experience wasn't up to par!

Little red barn is only on the to go list when I want to transport and revive my childhood memories.
I'm a fan of the Barn Door.

Just to be clear, are we talking about the Little Red Barn, or The Barn Door?

I can see why.....lol To me one is slightly better than the other but both have long standing presence in San Antonio. When we have Japanese visitors staying for a few weeks, they always want to go to Hungry Farmer but they never ask to go back to Red Barn....ever. I guess one time to Red Barn is enough for them but never went there with them to see why....only on my personal time have I gone.

Throwing my two cents in, Barn Door is disgusting.
