I would like to start looking into buying a side of beef to save money. I would rather go with a farmer and stay away from a place like the Culebra Meat Market. Also, does anyone know where to get farm fresh eggs and chickens?

My parents buy a side of beef, the equivalent of a whole pig, and a ton of chicken every year from Bolner's Meat Market off S. Flores. I can attest to the fact that their beef is some of the best I've ever had. Sure beats paying $40+ for a steak! Google the name (can't post URLs here) for the website.

I second Bolners. I knew Dave Bolner (who started the place, rest his soul) and his family and they ALWAYS had the BEST beef!!! Butcher cut and wrapped. EXCELLENT meat at EXCELLENT prices. Just not so convenient for me anymore except from time to time.

There's a new meat market on Grissom Road, near the Wok Inn. I have no idea if you can get a side of beef there, nor if you would even want to. I guess that's the point of this post. I'm hoping someone will go try it, and post a review. Please let me know if there are any funny smells, bloody floors, or pig-head shaped mounds of chorizo. I can't hang, if so. Thanks in advance.

I actually saw that today! I dunno if I'll brave that one, though. I think I'll check out the one on Flores.

If you were trying to make my otherwise strong stomach do a flippy flop, you win! LOL I generally have to leave Mrs. spamatdan at home or in the truck if I want to go into a butcher shop/meat market. She thought she was going to be brave enough to go inside a Culebra Meat Market last week, but fortunately for her, we were running out of time before our daughter got home from school. Though I do not need half a cow, it is bbq season so I am going to be on the hunt for yummy things to grill.

Definitely the best beef in town has to be found at Bolner's. They carry USDA prime, choice, AKAUSHI, and American Kobe beef.
And yes, you can find a side of beef there. I know from experience.
Clean, pleasant atmosphere. It has recently been renovated.

If you want to BBQ something big but you're tired of brisket, ask your butcher for a beef "shoulder clod". Cook it like a brisket real slow on the pit. They are not cheap but IMO they are the best choice for big BBQ's. I get mine a little bigger than I need and cut a few steaks off of it to freeze for later in the week.
