Man, Westlakes was packed with mall-goers in the 1980s (even through the 90s!) I had a HUGE crush on pop singer Tiffany in the 80s, the first time I saw her picture was on a life-sized cardboard standup in Hastings Records in Westlakes Mall in 1985. I'm working on a graphic novel and in it, one of the main characters hangs out in a fictional version of Westlakes Mall. I had a pair of Rude Dog shoes from the connected Target back then. Now, who remembers the radio station Super Q 96.1?

Yes if I recall i think it opened in 1983? could be wrong. But remember the Luby's at lunchtime had some long lines, and during the holidays you waited at least an hour.

Westlakes was "The Mall"???? I don't think so. Maybe he's confusing it with Wonderland, which was The Mall (in fact, the ONLY mall) in its heyday.

Agree. Westlakes was "a" mall at best.

I agree Westlakes was never much more than a glorified strip mall. I wouldn't say Wonderland was ever the only mall. I believe it was the first. Two others soon followed to comprise the big three. They remained the big three for many years. The mall years are long gone for the most part. I can't believe Ingram Park Mall is still surviving.

Which means that, for a while, it was the only mall.

It's also the result of a major chain like Montgomery Wards closing down completely. It was a major anchor to quite a few malls.

Maybe malls need new types of anchors.

Ya wanna make a mall successful? Anchor it with a strip club. Then, husbands would be happy to let the wife shop and they could say, "I'll wait for you in the food court". Of course, you'd want the food court to be next to the strip club.
