Hello everyone,

I'm hoping to move to Texas w/in the next few months. My first choice is Austin, but I don't want to rule out San Antonio. I wanted to know how the job market is in general from the people that live there. I also wanted to know specifically how the job market is specifically in IT?

Thank you in advance.

Dawn

Depends on what area of IT will you be working in. There is much opportunity in Network Administration and Help Desk here. It can range from school districts to consulting companies or corporate.

Help Desk is about it. There are a few opportunities for admins (I keep seeing the SAME ones pop up- that tells me that the company isn't doing something right). You can PM me, I'm an Admin myself and would be happy to talk to you about what I know.

We'd need to know specifically what you are looking for!

There are Tech companies here as well as IT positions for all over companies. I know people in IT at USAA, Valero, Capitol Group etc. There are also companies like Server Beach/Peer1 and Rackspace that are specifically IT based.

I would say we have some great opportunities and unemployment is lower here than many other US cities.

Hello,

Well...I've been with the same company for about 7 years. I've been an Applications Analyst and a Data Analyst. I know SQL, a little VBA. I'm an expert with Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Visio. Are they looking for these skill in Austin? I've heard both good and bad news. I've heard that the IT market is dried up. I've heard there's a lot of competition. On the other hand, I've heard that the IT market is extremely good. I've heard that companies are looking for people that have computer skills, because San Antonio does not have that knowledge base. Can you please tell me which is true?

Thank you in advance.

Dawn

In Austin, the IT market is not good according to an employment chart I looked at last month. I'm not sure about San Antonio, but it shouldn't be too much different.

When you say that you "know SQL, [and] a little VBA" what exactly do you mean? Have you done any development or mainly analysis work? Also, do you have any experience in database (or other) security? There are some companies that are looking for such people, but you'd need to bring some really good skills to the table...

Yeah, that doesn't seem to be her skillset though. I'd hardly call Microsoft app knowledge "IT".
