Well, there are two that I know of near me. Cupcake Junction on Potranco, and something else on Bandera/1604 near the Silverado. I have never been to either one, and don't plan to. They sell cup-cakes at HEB, and I'd rather go to Dairy Queen for ice cream!

HEB Central Market has a very small selection of gluten free cupcakes - they look kinda yuck though.

I hadn't even thought of cupcakes until I read this thread, but it reminded me that I've randomly run across three different cupcake places recently - one is on Main Ave. in Monte Vista in the same row of shops as Caparellis, one is ob Townsend Avenue across from Cambridge Elementary in Alamo Heights, and one is on Broadway south of Austin Hwy. I haven't been to either one, but they look really good.

Both of those places are the same business: Kate's Frosting, and it's not a bad cupcake if I say so myself. There's a good frosting-to-cake ratio with Kate's product and it's not so syrupy-sweet like some of the majors out there (Sprinkles in LA, Sugar Sweet Sunshine/Magnolia Bakery in NYC).

Kate's Chocolate Espresso cupcakes are incredible. I'm a little torn on their pricing ($1.25/mini, $3.25/regulars, $4.25/jumbo), but the product is good, so I'm likely to not complain about it too much.

Now if they'd only invent a full-flavor, calorie-free cupcake so I wouldn't have to swear a blue streak while on the stair machine

Ouch, that pricing is a little painful. I was thinking of getting a mixed two dozen for a friend's birthday coming up, but that's nearly $80. I love my friend, but my love can best be expressed by baked goods in the $30-$40 range, max.

How big are the minis? Are they too chintzy to pass out instead of cake slices at a birthday dinner?

The minis are truly mini... In lieu of a cake slice, it might look a little odd.
