Hey, folks.

I wanted to post this on here, as I think it will be of interest to many people. I've helped to organize it and will be attending (although I will not be wearing my "JuneOf48" badge.) The documentary is supposed to be brilliant. Free and open to the public!

SPECIAL FILM SCREENING AND PANEL DISCUSSION

War, the U.S. Army "Human Terrain Program," and the
Intellectual's Roles and Responsibilities in Time of War

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 7-9 P.M.

MAIN BUILDING 0.106

The objective of this interdisciplinary event is to invite scholars, students, activists, soldiers and community members to engage in a focused discussion about the roles and responsibilities of intellectuals in society, especially in time of war. The film and panel discussions explore several related questions. What should be taught in institutions of higher learning when the country is at war? What are the ethics of using institutions of higher learning to support the political and military objectives of the government? Where does dissent and intellectual freedom fit in an era where the American academy is increasingly collaborating with government agencies pursuant to purely political objectives?

Program:

7:00-7:15 Introductions by Panel Moderator and Event Host, Ben Olguin, UTSA English Department

7:15-8:30 Film Screening: Human Terrain/War Becomes Academic, by James Der Derian, David Udris & Michael Udris

8:30-8:45 Commentary by Filmmaker James Der Derian

8:45-9:30 Panel Discussion with Q & A from Audience

Panelists Include:

Bea Jauregui, Ph.D., Visiting Fellow at the Hope Center for the Advanced Study of India, University of Pennsylvania, co-editor of "Anthropology and Global Counterinsurgency" (U of Chicago Press, 2010)

John Philip Santos, Rhodes Scholar, Filmmaker and Author, Brown University

Norma Alarcon, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor, U of California at Berkeley, Visiting Scholar, UTSA English Department

The event sponsors are:
UTSA English Department, Anthropology Department, UTSA College of Liberal and Fine Arts, UTSA Honors College
