Tomorrow morning will be a great time to use your favorite Fire Ant treatment on your yard. While you don't want to apply to a wet yard, the rain we had today will bring them out foraging tomorrow. We heard Sevin's Over-n-Out is the best, so we bought some at Lowe's on Sunday. We also notified our neighbors and they are doing the same thing...always good to have your neighbors in on it as the fire ants tend to move from a treated yard to an untreated yard.

Spinosad is a good non-chemical treatment for fire ant mounds. Some organic gardeners claim that fire ant mounds can be killed off by drenching them with club soda.

Ya know, every time I find something new that works on those lil' suckers, they eventually become immune to it. Hardy lil' shavers, ain't they?

Okay, so we tried Sevin's Over and Out and it did absolutely NOTHING. We used the yard treatment, then finally the topical treatment.

Club soda, eh, Bowie? I'm just about ready for anything. The landscapers are coming tomorrow to clean out our flower beds, and there are at least four large mounds in them...does anyone have any suggestions?

I knew a guy that rigged his mower so that the exhaust went underneath the mower. He would push it over the mound and the Carbon Monoxide would kill the ants. I don't recommend doing this of course but it is a clever idea.

The yellow jackets are back, too. Dang it. Found one making a nest right in the door frame outside. That's no good!

Default Fire Ants

The over and out will work on the yard, but it can take 4 to 6 weeks for it to work like it is supposed to. We use a product called Top Choice and it has the same active ingredient as the over and out, of course in the Top Choice it is a little stronger, but it does work. Just give it time and it will help. The club soda trick I haven't seen work myself but you never know. For more quicker results I tell customers who want to do it themselves to buy Ortho Fire Ant powder, it smells like rotten eggs, but a light dusting on any mound you see and it will kill them pretty quick. Just remember lightly dust the mound, do not disturb it and you will get a kill. I hope this helps.

Club soda is posted on snopes as a myth (snopes.com: Club Soda Gets Rid of Fire Ants?), that said, we still bought a few and are going to give it a try this weekend in our garden area. We don't like using fertilizers, etc. if possible esp. where we're growing food and kids are playing. I'm hoping our ants run far from the club soda and we're done with them for a bit.
