I'm looking at homes in Palm Springs and Cathedral City. Can anyone tell me about the quality of life there?

How far away is it to big cities? Tell me everything I need to know before I decide to move there.

Thank you.

I personally prefer Palm Springs to Cathedral City, but prices reflect this general preference. Palm Springs has a walkable (depending on heat tolerance) downtown with plenty of good restaurants. All standard big box stores and chains are represented in the area. Palm Desert mall has department store chains. Big cities LA and San Diego are 2 to 2-1/2 hours away.

Define "quality of life". What's important to you? From where are you coming?

Palm Springs is about 3 hours from Los Angeles, 2 hours from Orange County and 1 hour from the Inland Empire.

I would suggest Palm Springs over Cathedral City, simply because CC isn't that nice with closed businesses, mostly empty strip malls, car dealerships and commercial buildings. Condos and homes are cheaper, but there's a reason. It all depends on the quality of life you're seeking to find. There are some OK residential areas in CC. When you visit there area you'll see the difference when leaving Palm Springs, passing through Cathedral City and into Rancho Mirage. It goes from nice, not so nice and nice again in a few short miles.

Palm Springs has some really nice areas and some are less than great. The town went really went downhill in the 1990's-2010 and now is finally being returned to its well deserved glory as being an upscale destination for affluent tourist, families and celebrities again. The downtown is being rebuilt, remodeled and redesigned with new mega-mall being built, new stores, restaurants and I have seen tourism increase since the improvements have started. It will take time, but these improvements could only help the local economy and property values. It also helps that younger celebs are moving into town like Leonardo DeCaprio and others are rumored to be looking now (according to my real estate agent). Palm Springs is becoming trendy again.

My 2nd home is in Palm Desert. I like being a very short drive to all the things I love about Palm Springs (shopping, dining, nightlife) and live in more of a resort area. I was looking only in Palm Springs or Palm Desert. All the cities are close together and are linked together by tourism and business with being named "greater Palm Springs area." You can find videos on Youtube.com that advertise the area as one big fun place to enjoy. Just search Greater Palm Springs area.

Palm Springs is really a wonderful place and I don't think you can go wrong if you buy in the right areas of it. Good luck on your home search!
