The plan was to move to Hollywood...but my currant employer is now in Ontario,CA. Still looking forward to the move though. So if I want to drive to LA on the weekends for fun, how long would it take? A few hours? Also, I have never been to Ontario (been to LA a dozen times) is there things to do? Just my wife & I, looking for areas to hike, malls maybe, some recreation stuff. Any advice? Thanks!

Hi Jake. If you want to drive to LA on the weekends for fun it will take you about 1 hour (depending on where in LA). It's not bad.

Ontario has the Ontario Mills (mall), but Victoria Gardens (also a mall) is about 5 minutes up the highway in Rancho Cucamonga, and its so nice. It is an outdoors mall (kinda like the Inland Empire's version of Fashion Island). You'll like that. Plenty of restaurants there such as P.F. Changs, Cheesecake Factory, etc.

You are close to several ski resorts, if you and the wife ski. There are really pretty hiking trails in Wrightwood (about 30 minutes north of Ontario).

Ontario isn't an activity mecca, per say, but it is close to many area that are. If this is a short-range move, you'll be fine.

You are 3 hours from Las Vegas.

You are 4 hours from the Colorado River - our favorite place!!!

If you like Nascar, Fontana has a track there - also lots of fun!

Calico Ghost Town is a fun place to visit, it's north of the High Desert.

There is a beautiful botanical garden in Claremont (15 minutes North/ East of Ontario) that a lot of people don't know about. The Candlelight Pavilion is also in Claremont. It is a nice dinner & play house. We've seen several wonderful performances there!

San Antonio Hospital in Upland, is the preferred hospital in that area. Stay away from Kaiser in Fontana. I would'nt get a hangnail removed there!

You'll have plenty to do! Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions - I grew up in that area, so I have lots of information! Take care.

Any areas outside of Ontario that are more affordable for someone transferring from Oregon? Say in the 300, to 400 thousand range?

Hey GirlsRus, thanks for the info!
So, let's say we live in Ontario and on the weekend we want to go to Venice Beach, when would be a good time to travel (on a Saturday) and how long might it take to get there? And also to Hollywood? We have a friend in Hollywood and we want to visit him often so I'm just trying to see how long it would take to drive it. He says about 2 hours, but that sounds steep.
Thanks for your help

It does when you look at a map. Then when you hit that endless train of cars going 0-10 mph, it makes more sense. Weekend traffic can be as bad as weekdays between people working Saturdays and people who aren't, but are out and about during the day when they ordinarily wouldn't.

I'd say more like 1-2 hours. Maybe your friend drives slow. Just kidding. You may encounter traffic, but parking will require more patience in both Hollywood and Venice Beach. Bring quarters for the parking meters. You'll have a great time! People watching is fun.

Live in Rancho Cucamonga. Great place. Close to Ont. Every where is a hour. On the weekend, LA, Beaches, Hollywood, Ski resorts,it's all a hour.

Meanwhile Rancho Cucamonga has a lot to offer.
