My husband and I live in San Diego and have been thinking of taking a day trip/drive through one of the mountain areas in the IE.

I'm trying to determine which drive/town is more scenic: Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear Lake or Idyllwild/Pine Cove (or another I'm not thinking of)? Both will take us around 5-6 hours round trip from where we live.

If you're wondering how exactly I define "scenic" I would say that I'm looking for which place has the most interesting foliage/views from the road/best overall drive to and from.

This would just be a day trip and we won't be skiing or staying overnight. We mostly are just planning on packing a lunch and driving, and possibly taking some pictures of what we see.

Any insight would be awesome. Thanks!

Since you're coming from San Diego, Idyllwild would be much closer, and it's a beautiful drive!

If you go through Anza you get to see the desert as well as the mountains. And if you go through Hemet you get a great twisty road - it's a favorite for those with sports cars and motorcycles, since it's so much fun to drive.
