Does anyone have any specific swimming lessons recommendations that they could swear by? These 10yo's here need something of a boot camp to get them competent in water. The YMCA is too hit-and-miss. We had better luck one year at the Coronado rec center. Thanks in advance.

Aqua pros on Claremont is very good. YMCA is inconsistent and depends too much on the instructor

My sons went to Murray Callan in PB and it was very similar to La Petit Baleen in SF. Both schools are good but they take the slow approach. It took my son 6 months to learn how to swim there. (la petit baleen) My dad said his parents took him to a beach at Cape Cod and the instructors basically tossed the kids in the water and didn't let them on land until they could swim. They learned in one day.

Our kids take their swimming lessons here but we will probably change when we get back from vacation. It really depends how good the instructor is. For our 2.5 year old, his teach is VERY good and great with kids and our 4 year old's teacher isn't as good and much slower. Not bad per se but just not as good as Alex. So if you go, request Alex. He is very good.

Also, you have the option for group lessons in 2 or 3 kids at a time. We preferred individual but they didn't offer that. If you want a group of 2 kids, you have to arrange the 2nd pair. They wouldn't allow our two kids to start at the same time as they say they were too far away with the gap in ages.

So they stuck both kids in a group of 3 kids which isn't too good as your kids don't get too much time during the session. Plus the pool is totally packed with kids during the lesson. They only have one pool at Floaties.

I think when we get back from Europe, we'll opt for private swim lessons. They were more expensive, but I think it's all relative because with a private lesson I think your kids will end up swimming much quicker so ultimately less lessons involved.

Somebody did that to me, when I was about five. What I learned "in one day" wasn't how to swim.

Finally, when I was ten, I had a camp counselor who knew how to overcome the sort of fear of swimming that comes from sh*t like tossing kids in ...

Grew up with chilly cloudy June swimming lessons in the bay at low tide, everyone could swim like a fish by five.
