I'm looking to make new friends in San Diego. Maybe a movie or coffee?

I would check out meetup.com with regard to your special interest which could just be meeting new people (or food, surfing, knitting or what not)

While I have met people and made friends from meeting them off the internet.... my closest friends I've met through other means like work, church, the gym, places I might volunteer, work social groups or associations, neighbors, friends of friends, etc.

You just have to be careful sometimes as some total strangers off the internet can be weird or creepy sometimes.

I totally agree with this. Especially the weird/creepy internet folks lol

One of the great things I like about it here in San Diego, is the volunteer base. Its huge, unlike anywhere I have seen with the vast amount of either religious affiliated groups or tree hugging types.

Just look up volunteer orgs in SD that might share your ideals. Its far easier to make friends that way as you already have something in common.

When I moved to where I am now, I volunteered and met many locals to get to know them. Now its just nice to see some familiar faces in my neighborhood when I am out and about.

I agree that Meetup.com is a great way to meet people in your area with common interests. I have met a lot of really nice people that way, and there are a ton of different meetup groups in the SD area for any and all interests/activities.
