My husband was offered a job in Newport Beach and I one in the biotech area in La Jolla. We thought we would compromise by settling in Dana Point/San Clemente. Can I commute from there? How long would it take to drive at 8 AM? How long would it take to drive to Oceanside (to catch the Coaster)?

Is the reverse better--commuting to OC from Oceanside? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I wouldn't even consider this. You are both setting yourself up for miserable commutes. Figure 30-45 minutes to drive from San Clemente, and then 30 minutes to Sorrento valley, and then 30 minutes on the bus to Torrey Mesa.

I have a friend who lives in San Clemente and takes the train (Amtrak, not the Coaster) from there into SD.........so, you don't have to drive south to O'side to take a train (unless Amtrak doesn't stop in Sorrento Valley, which I am not sure about). This is about the only scenario I think I could live with, and even then you may find it wears on you after a while. You didn't mention if you plan to rent or buy, but if it were me I would rent until I knew what I could handle. If you move to O'side, then your "commute" (taking the Coaster) will be much easier than your husband's, who will be in south OC traffic coming and going every day (the Toll Rd. could cut out some of it), and the frequent possibility of the southbound 5 backing up well before O'side in the afternoons, especially on Fridays. Also keep in mind, if there is any sort of accident on the 5 between San Clemente & O'side, then you are really screwed because there are no alternate routes. I did this commute for about a year, living in C-bad and working in Laguna Hills..........it quickly wore thin and easily sucked a minimum of two hours out of my life, every day.
