I literally just did this last monday- except I ordered additional pages. I paid $60 for expedited service and $82 for the pages. My appointment was at 8am and I arrived 10 minutes before. I think I got out of there at 8:30 (i was about 10th in line, but was the first to leave). Fill out everything in advance and be prepared. I brought extra copies of everything- passport pages, proof of upcoming travel, and pictures. I picked it up at 3pm the same day. Best part is that they gave me twice the number of passport pages that I actually paid for (48 instead of 24). A definite WIN for me! Good luck and enjoy your vacation

BTW, Office is on the 10th floor at the aforementioned address. Search "San Diego Passport Agency" and call the number to schedule an appointment ASAP. If you get expedited service ($60) I believe it comes to you in at least 5 days. Be sure to have your SSN ready (meaning- know the number lol) and don't lose track of the appointment number they give you.

A Passport Card is also an option if your friend is only travelling by land to Mexico. It is cheaper, but can not be used for travel by air.

From advice in this thread, it looks like it is much easier to get an expedited passport now. I suppose the federal government increased the resources in this division given the new security features and the fact that it is required now for travel to Mexico. When I had to get an expedited passport 14 years ago I had to drive up to the federal building in Los Angeles.

Also, second the advice on getting the paperwork filled out ahead of time.

Is this true? They took my photo, although I'm not sure if they actually used it......?

My non-smiling photos look like mugshots. Definitely not photogenic

That's what the girl at the UPS Store told me when I was in getting mine done the other day. It's because it has to look as much like you as possible when the officials at the airport check the passport, and airline travel is so damn miserable these days no one is smiling (joke).

If you travel a lot its to accommodate the fun little stamps you get when you enter a country :-)

At one point mine was like a pocket bible lol
