Hey guys, my g/f and I are strongly considering moving to SD and I'm visiting this weekend in search for work. We would like to live within biking/walking distance to the beach and stores/restaurants. We're in our 20's and have no kids. The only thing we must have is cleanliness and low crime. We don't want to spend more than 1400.00 a month on rent. Any ideas for neighborhoods I can look in for rentals? I hear PB is fun and OB is not so clean. I've visited SD 3x and she went to school there for a bit...any ideas would be appreciated!

1400/mo would put you in a decent 1BR condo in north PB which is quiet. Avoid PB proper. South of OB (Sunset Cliffs) is also a nice area. Neither are as clean as somewhere like La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas or Carlsbad, but factor in the appropriate increases in rent and commute time as needed.

My choices if I was to live near the beach would be Bird Rock, Del Mar, Sunset Cliffs, Encinitas, probably in that order. PB and Carlsbad are too crowded.

Carlsbad too crowded? Not in my experiences.
1400 would put you in a good 1BR, but if you're willing to compromise on the travel time to the beach, you can get a better apartment (2BR/2BTH) for around 1300 in eastern carlsbad, Vista, or Oceanside. Vista is the farthest from the beach and it's about a 5-10 minute drive, on city streets.
Good luck!
