Here in San Diego it doesn't seem like people go nearly all out like in other cities. However, there are some neighborhoods here where it's much better than others.

Last week we went over to Rancho Penasquitos and just off Black Mountain Road there are like 4 or 5 blocks where people do a GREAT job. Almost every single house has tons of lights, displays, even some have Christmas music playing and many people out in their driveways greeting kids walking by.

RANCHO PENASQUITOS

Oviedo Street - off Black Mtn. Rd. "Christmas Card Lane": includes Twin Trails, Carmel Mtn. Rd.,Ellingham St., Renato St., Oviedo St., Twin Trails Dr., Barrymore St., Totherham Ave., Talca Ave., Talca Ct., Allenbrook Way, Davenport Ave., Amber Sky Ln.

I can't speak for other areas but this website has a list of supposedly good areas.

Oviedo St is the best in the area.

Lana & Jamar Drives in Clairemont is pretty good too.

Garrison St in Point Loma has a cluster of nicely lit homes.

All of the above locations can get very crowded with cars. Especially on the weekends. My wife and I usually park nearby and walk the area. Be sure to have a few dollars in your pocket because the local residents often sell cookies, coffee etc.

Also, the Plumosa Park area of Point Loma has it's traditional luminary (lighted candles in paper bags) event on Christmas Eve only. The candled area covers a couple of blocks. It's early in the evening. Something like sundown to 8 p.m (or when the candles burnout).

Rancho San Diego has some very good areas with light displays.

The San Carlos area too has very nice displays.

Makes me sad on a couple of levels that I won't be in San Diego this year to look at the lights on our usual sightseeing routes....

I totally agree cruitr. We were impressed with the lights and Christmas spirit and the kids LOVED it. We plan to go through the area again this week with the kids. Yep, traffic can get crowded so it seems like the best plan of action is to park a few blocks away and just walk.

Even better walking because some houses have intricate train sets set up as well. They really get into the spirit there. Good for them!

The lights at Del Mar Racetrack are fun, though they could use some new stuff every once in a while. Seems like it's always the same show every year.

If you make the trek to PQ, head down Ted Williams and hit up the lights in Poway as well. I THINK they're off Rockwell Ct, or possibly Saddlewood Drive. I can't remember the exact street, but take Twin Peaks Rd to Silverset St. Go south (up the hill) on Silverset, then turn left onto Palisades. Follow the road down the hill, then keep an eye out for the street on the right with all the lights. You can't miss it. Best way to see it is to park and walk it.

I just found out Candy Cane Lane in Chula Vista is no more
At one time that was one of the biggest Christmas lights display in the country!
Bob's Christmas wonderland in La Mesa is pretty awesome,7171 Cornell Avenue (I think)
Just bring 1 can good.
Holiday Hill in La Mesa is also pretty good 8065 Stadler st.

Balboa Park has a nice display, but the best Christmas lights viewing is in those select residential neighborhoods. People are very creative with their own homes there.

We knew someone who moved into a neighborhood in RP that is one of those listed. It was started by a lady who went over the top on decorating her home, then the neighbors followed and it became a tradition and spilled over to adjacent streets.
