I'm trying to move back to San Diego, and I have a few job possibilities. One is in Irvine. I don't want to live in O.C. Realistically, what would the commute be like from Oceanside to Irvine? (I am not sure I'd have to go in rush hour - I'd likely be working graveyard shift).

Thanks.

Actually, the commute from Oceanside to Irvine is probably better than the commute from Oceanside into San Diego because you're going against traffic (although I suppose where in Irvine you're headed to will make a difference.) You're not going to see any traffic on 5 North through Oceanside & Camp Pendleton & maybe some slowing when you hit Mission Viejo.

As a note, though - we live off of Highway 76 in Oceanside and it is pretty congested during rush hour. (Can take 20+ minutes to get to the freeway 7 miles away in rush hour traffic.) So, if you can get closer to I-5 and not have to take the 78 or 76, that'll help.

Thanks, I'd be in Civic Center park area, which looks to be just off the 405. I don't know very much about Oceanside yet, so I don't know where I'd live. I'm considering Oceanside because it is a place I can afford a home. Is the area near the 5 safe?

Before moving to SD, I was commuting from San Clemente to Irvine. As SoCal commutes go, it's not bad . . . in rush hour there is congestion from about Crown Valley Pkwy in Mission Viejo pretty much all the way to the El Toro Y (5/405 merge) in the morning, and from Irvine all the way back to Crown Valley in the evening. My trip was probably 35 mins in the morning, 45 at night. Add another 20 mins from Oceanside - it's not congested but it is another 22+ miles. There is always the 73 toll road as an option - though it's not particularly convenient to central Irvine where you'ld be.

In the off hours it's free-flowing . . . though still a pretty long commute from Oside.

I lived in Irvine for ~1 year & whenever I needed to go to San Diego I would use the Metrolink which ends in Oceanside [then I x-ferred to the Amtrak]. For me, I didn't want to deal with the freeway traffic & the travel time was approx the same; this might be an option for you? Sorry, no input for residing in Oceanside. Best Wishes.

Thanks to both of you for the input. I'll look into the train option.
