I had some relatives that rented down there and commuted across into San Diego everyday. They lasted about year, never said why they moved back. Also have heard there are massive amount of kids that come over for the public education every day. Also talked with a man that said there are a lot of retirees and individuals on ssi/disability that stay in hotels or apartments in Mexico. I would like to investigate this...any general words of advise guys? thanks!

If you are living there, but need to cross the border on a regularly, it will add hours to the amount of time you spend sitting in your car.

On the radio traffic reports, I sometimes hear that the wait time at Otay Mesa crossing to the east, is only 15 minutes, but mostly I hear of wait times of about an hour. At the San Ysidro crossing, waits can sometimes reach two hours.

Most people that live across the border will try to get a Sentri pass, so that the wait is shorter.

When I was considering this, I came across this guy's blog - that was rather interesting. He parks in SD, and walks across the boarder, which is a lot faster - than doing so via car. Maybe this will help you...

I used to rent down there and know the area well. Do the following:

1. Get a passport card and/or passport. They have an RFID chip that is valid for use with READY lane (faster than the "loser lanes" as the CBP calls them).
2. Get a SENTRI pass: U.S. Customs and Border Protection - Travel. Fastest than READY, pretty much zero wait at 5:55AM and 15-25 minute wait in the evenings.

PM me once you have the above. For a nominal fee ($99 - covers gas, etc.) I'll take you down there and show you the good areas to rent in.
