I'm moving to SD next month (was looking at OC but decided SD instead). 27-year-old single male. I will likely find a extended stay hotel for the first couple weeks while I am apartment searching, but I want to narrow down areas to search.

My criteria:
--Studio/1bd for under $1000
--Walkable and bike-friendly neighborhood/area with take-out and quick service restaurants, coffee shops (I work from home, want a place easy to go out and grab lunch/coffee nearby)
--Variety of different ethnic restaurants fairly close (Pho, Thai, Korean, etc -- Mexican food too but that seems to be everywhere(?))
--Good area for singles (more singles, less families)
--Since commute time/hassle will not be a factor, any nice areas that may be a little cheaper because of their hellish commute times? Maybe in North SD County?

Some places I've been researching so far: North Park, Normal Heights, Golden Hill, to the north...Escondido, Carlsbad areas. Any places East or just North of downtown?

Of course I won't be able to find a place that matches all the criteria, but any recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks!

North Park, Normal Heights, Golden Hill, University Heights, and South Park. North Park, Normal Heights and City Heights would be closest to the ethnic restaurants.

Thanks for the reply, I keep hearing good things about those areas so I will start researching apartments there.

I would be open to finding a housemate but I know its a crap-shoot as far as how those relationships go, plus as I work from home that could be a negative for renters with an open room.

You should be able to find a studio or possibly a 1br for your price range. Search Craigslist in those areas in your price range, and post the addresses here for comments.

Saw a 1bd in apartment complex on Chamoune Ave just south of University in City Heights.

Crappy neighborhood, not far from where I live. You don't want to live in City Heights. Stick to the other areas that I listed, they're nicer!

If you're going to be in an extended stay hotel for a while, wait until you are here before you start looking for an apartment. Get an idea of the vibe of an area before you start perusing Craigslist.

I disagree. A couple of weeks in an extended stay isn't much time to learn the neighborhoods starting from nothing.

So go ahead and look, and ask us about what looks promising, and we'll tell you what we can about what you're looking at. Maybe come to town with some destinations in mind.
